The Patent That Became an Exhibition Object
Seventeen years after the 1889 patent, a model of Reuben J. Spalding’s flying machine was displayed at a major American automobile and aviation exhibition. The idea was entirely human-powered—a so-called ornithopter—and stood there alongside early experiments that would soon make flight less fanciful and more real.

The story behind the motif

Posts with a patent drawing dated October 5, 1869, for a so-called "flying machine". The drawing contains detailed illustrations of a manual flight device created by inventor W.F. Quinby.

The aircraft consists of a system of struts, harnesses and wing-like structures, connected to the body via straps and levers. The aim was likely to simulate the wing beat of birds through human power, where the user manually moves the wings to create lift and propulsion.

The drawing is typical of the time's experimental attempts in flight and reflects man's early dreams of being able to fly. The patent and illustrations also show signatures of witnesses and details explaining its mechanics.
