The story behind the motif

The painting "Four seasons" was made in 1573 and belongs to a series of four oil paintings representing the four seasons. Each one features a profile portrait made up of fruits, vegetables and plants related to the current season
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan and worked in Italy and Austria, where he was part of the Imperial Court under Emperor Maximilian II. His artwork reflected the Renaissance interest in natural science, botany and zoology, and his detailed depictions of nature were part of the scientific development of this period.
