Lofoten, Completed in Munich
The painting is based on sketches from Otto Sinding’s first stay in Lofoten in the winter of 1881–82, but was completed in his studio in Munich. That is why “Munich” also appears beside the signature – a small reminder of how experiences from northern Norway were refined far to the south.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Norwegian artist Otto Sinding from 1883. The painting is called "Fra Reine i Lofoten" and depicts a landscape in Lofoten, which is an island group in northern Norway. This is a typical depiction of the Norrland fjords with the traditional fishermen's huts in front of the snow-capped mountains. 

Otto Sinding was a Norwegian painter and member of the Norwegian artist circle during the 19th century. Lofoten and its nature was a recurring motif in his work, and this painting is an excellent example of his skill in capturing the magnificence of Norwegian nature.
