A Danish King at Gripsholm
The anonymous portrait of the king of Denmark–Norway is now at Gripsholm Castle, in Sweden’s state portrait collection. There, Frederick II makes an unusual neighbour: his attempt to subdue Sweden triggered the Northern Seven Years’ War of 1563–1570, which ended without a victor but wrecked the king’s finances.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful portrait of Frederick II (1534-1588) - king of Denmark and Norway from 1559.

Frederick II was the son of Christian III of Denmark and Dorothea of ​​Saxe-Lauenburg. As the mother was the sister of Gustav Vasa's first wife Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg, Fredrik was a cousin of the Swedish king Erik XIV, who was Catherine's son.

Frederick II suffered from malaria and during the last years of his life was plagued by illness. In his eulogy, the famous historiographer and priest Anders Sørensen Vedel openly declared that the king probably hastened his death through drunkenness.
