Painted in an Autumn Storm
The painting belonged to a series of three that Albert Edelfelt executed in 1890 on commission from Russia’s imperial couple, Alexander III and the Danish-born Maria Feodorovna. The preparatory work was done from the deck of the frigate Sjælland in Copenhagen; in letters, Edelfelt described how rain, wind and cold repeatedly overturned his easel.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting From the port of Copenhagen I by Albert Edelfelt from the 1890s. In the picture we see a man who is going to dock at the port in Copenhagen. In the background we see the Danish flag.

Albert Edelfelt was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame. As a 19-year-old, Edelfelt went to Antwerp in 1873 to study history painting. He then continued his painting studies in Paris, where in 1800 he received, among other things, a medal for the painting Ett barns likfärd (1879).

Artist: Albert Edelfelt | Created: 1890.
