From Royal Yacht to Lightship
Diana had an unusual past: before becoming a lightship, she was Esplendian, a royal yacht designed by Fredrik Henrik af Chapman. With the royal family aboard, she took part in the inauguration of the Göta Canal in 1832. After being sold to the Swedish pilotage service in 1866, she was rebuilt and later served as lightship no. 9 until 1900.

The story behind the motif

Poster of a drawing of a lightship named Diana from 1866. The technical drawing gives a detailed view of the ship's construction, and includes its structure and design. 

Diana was a lightship that was constructed and operated in Sweden during this time, and was designed to operate in hard-to-reach places where it was not possible to build a fixed lighthouse. At this time, lighthouses and lightships were important to help ships navigate at sea, especially in archipelagos and on dangerous coasts.
