A Zorn in Watercolour
Although Zorn is often associated with oil paintings, this is a watercolour. It entered the Gothenburg Museum of Art only in 1970, as part of Elsa Sauer’s donation of three Zorn watercolours and six graphic works – including a view of the Alhambra and a canal in Venice.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Garden in Algiers by the Swedish artist Anders Zorn from 1887. The Swedish title of the painting is Garden in Algiers and it depicts a southern garden with a gravel path leading into the greenery of the picture.

During the 1880s, Zorn traveled extensively with his wife, Emma. In January 1887 they traveled south via Paris to Algiers in North Africa, where they stayed for two months. Zorn was very fond of the city and was productive during his stay. Here he mainly painted landscapes but also architecture and from models.

The couple lived in the European part of the city. Together with Robert Thegerström, Zorn rented a house in the old citadel on a hill above the kasbah, the old quarter of Algiers. The house could also be used as a studio.

Artist: Anders Zorn | Created: 1887.
