From the North Cape to Lindesnes
The photographer Paul Andreas Røstad travelled from the North Cape to Lindesnes, working methodically through all the seasons of the year. He supplied images to handbooks, encyclopaedias and the yearbooks of Den Norske Turistforening – so the Geilo photograph forms part of a larger effort to give Norway a photographic face.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph by Paul Andreas Røstad, depicting a chair lift in Geilo, a popular ski resort in Norway in 1956. The image captures a lone passenger riding up the chair lift, with mountains and valleys in the background. 

Paul Andreas Røstad (1908-1986) was a Norwegian photographer who documented everyday scenes and specialized in scenic landscapes with an eye for detail and light.

The photograph was taken on August 1, 1956, reflecting a time when many Norwegian ski resorts began to develop their infrastructure and offer modern amenities to tourists. Geilo was already a popular destination for both ski enthusiasts and nature lovers at this time.
