The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful painting created in 1665 by Johannes Vermeer - a Dutch painter.
Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer's most famous painting. It is not a portrait, but a 'tronie' – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in an exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear.
Johannes Vermeer was the master of light. This is shown in the painting by the softness of the girl and the glints of light on her moist lips, and the shining pearl. Vermeer was best known for his very realistically depicted everyday subjects.
Artist: Johannes Vermeer | Created: 1665.
