Eleven years after the Paris poster, Greek George continued touring in New Zealand. When wrestler John Theo Hatzopulos performed in Gisborne in 1899, he was advertised in both English and te reo Māori – where his stage name was rendered as Kiriki Hori.

The story behind the motif

This illustration advertises the Bataclan, a famous cabaret and entertainment venue in Paris that opened in 1865 and was known for its lively and extravagant shows during the late 1800s and early 1900s. 

The poster designed by Jules Chéret, a famous poster artist, promotes Greek George who was a world champion wrestler during his time. Chéret is known for revolutionizing poster art with his colorful and dynamic designs.

The poster shows the muscular artist Greek George, standing with his arms crossed, wearing a shirtless shirt. The text on the poster advertises that George is performing every night at the Bataclan.
