After nineteen sieges
Grimskär had already been besieged 19 times when the skerry shifted from defence to navigation. After being removed from the kingdom’s permanent defences in 1822, it was taken over by the Swedish Pilotage Service in 1837, becoming a lighthouse and pilot station at the southern entrance to Kalmar – an unusual transformation from redoubt to guide.

The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful drawing of Grimskär lighthouse. On the picture we see the text: "Drawing for a wooden Lighthouse, equipped with a stationary lens apparatus of the 4th order to be erected on Grimskär near Kalmar."
The lighthouse was built in 1837 on the islet of Grimskär. In 1851, Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam was responsible for the construction of the Grimskär lighthouse. This was rebuilt and changed in 1865 and 1879 to a combined lighthouse and pilot lookout. Pilot operations were closed in 1931.
