Nationalmuseum describes how the story of the fallen king then functioned as the nineteenth century’s nationalist heroic tale: a monarch who sacrificed himself for his people and faith.

The painting depicts a dramatic moment after the famous Battle of Lützen, where the Swedish King Gustaf II Adolf fell in battle. The painting captures the scene where the king is found dead on the battlefield, surrounded by wounded soldiers and followers mourning his death.

Carl Wahlbom (1810-1858) was a Swedish painter and a significant figure in the Romantic movement in Sweden. He was known for his historical and mythological paintings, and his work has had a long-lasting influence and continues to be a part of Swedish art history.
