When the Mountain Plateau Got a Road
In 1948, it had been only nine years since it first became possible to drive all the way across Hardangervidda. The road reached Haugastøl in 1928, but only when it was linked to the road from Geilo in 1939 did it become possible to cross the mountain plateau by car. The image captures a fairly new everyday reality in the high mountains.

The story behind the motif

Hardangervidda is a mountain area in southern Norway, east of the Hardangerfjord. A large part of Hardangervidda is occupied by the Hardangervidda National Park of 3,422 km². The area forms the largest high mountain plateau in Europe and has several larger glaciers.
