Towards Christiania, Three Years After the Opening
In July 1912, the two-year-old steam locomotive NSB 26a no. 216 gathered speed with its train bound for Christiania, as Oslo was then called. The Bergen Railway had been officially opened less than three years earlier, on 27 November 1909, after snow problems in the high mountains delayed the opening.

The story behind the motif

Haugastøl is a station on the Bergen Line in Norway. The station is located in the municipality of Hol, located between the stations Ustaoset in the east and Finse in the west. The station is 275.50 kilometers from Oslo and is 988 meters above sea level.

Anders Beer Wilse was a Norwegian photographer who documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century and also worked in the United States. Wilse was born in Flekkefjord, but grew up in Kragerø and decided early on to become a sailor. After graduating from the technical school in Horten in 1882, he emigrated to the United States in 1884.
