Twelve Paintings in a Few Weeks
When the cold eased at Giverny in January 1893, Monet worried that the thaw had come too early: he wrote to his art dealer that he had managed only four or five unfinished canvases. Yet before February was over, he had completed more than a dozen variations on the same fleeting winter phenomenon.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting Ice Floes created in 1893 by Claude Monet - a historically famous French artist who is considered one of the pioneers of Impressionism.

In the picture we see a beautiful winter landscape in dull colors that create a feeling of fog. Through the mist it is possible to make out trees reflected in still water. In the water we also see small ice floes, which has given rise to the painting's name.

During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), Monet moved to Britain to avoid conscription. There he studied the works of John Constable and William Turner, whose landscape paintings would serve as inspiration for Monet's innovations in color study. Between 1871 and 1878, Monet lived in Argenteuil, a village on the Seine near Paris, where he painted some of his most famous works.
