A Publisher Stood Behind the Print
Irises was published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, the publisher who became a driving force behind shin-hanga, the twentieth-century revival of Japanese color woodblock printing. Koson’s nature images also circulated widely on the Western market—an example of how Japanese works were already being created with an international audience in mind.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Irises by the Japanese printmaker Ohara Koson, dated to the period 1925–1936. Koson is especially renowned for his bird-and-flower images, in which the forms of nature are distilled into elegant, atmospheric compositions.

Blooming irises rise against a soft background in red, white, and blue. The slender leaves and the curved forms of the flowers create a distinct vertical rhythm. The original is a color woodblock print published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, a central publisher of the modern Japanese woodblock print movement.

Artist: Ohara Koson (1877–1945) | Date: 1925–1936.
