A Work That Lived On
The original was part of a new, greatly expanded edition of Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau’s tree handbook. By then, the original author had been dead for almost two decades; several botanists completed the work, while Pierre-Joseph Redouté contributed the drawings. Between 1800 and 1819, the project grew into seven sumptuous volumes.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a classic illustration of holly in 1801. The illustration was published in a French textbook on plants and trees between 1801-1819 with the title Traité des Arbres et Arbustes que l'on cultive en France en pleine terre. In the picture we also see the text llex aquifolium , which is holly in Latin.
