The story behind the motif
Jesse Owens was ranked in his lifetime as "perhaps the foremost and most famous track and field athlete of all time". Owens set three world records and a fourth in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten Track Meet in Michigan - a feat that has never since been surpassed and has been called "the greatest 45 minutes in the history of sports."
Owens became world famous after his performance in the 1936 Summer Olympics after winning 4 gold medals: 100 meters, long jump, 200 meters and 4x100 meter relay.
He was by far the best athlete in the Olympics and won great respect from his opponents but also created great frustration with Hitler and the Nazi regime who had hoped that German athletes would demonstrate their superiority in the competitions.
