When Joe Louis defeated James J. Braddock in 1937, he became the first Black heavyweight world champion since Jack Johnson. He then held the title through 24 bouts—longer than any heavyweight champion before or after him. His success made him a national symbol far beyond boxing.

The story behind the motif

Louis was an American professional boxer who competed between 1934 to 1951 and is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He was reigning world champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949.
