The story behind the motif
A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow from Saga of the year in 1927 with the motif July.
Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.
In the book it says: The sun burns the spinach and parsley, the leaves wilt on the poppy and lily, the soil is so dry in the flower bed, all the flowers cry out for water. Brita strokes the jug so eagerly. Come and help her then, someone else! No, the others with the mowers hurry. Listen! Didn't that sound like thunder? Rumble on and let the lightning pop! Soon the rain will fall in torrents! Brita laughs: Now they get all happy, all the plants, when they get to bathe!
Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
