Midsummer in the Final Verse
In Beskow’s verse for June, the outing ends with a well-used pole becoming a maypole for the evening’s festivities. The image is part of Årets saga, in which the year’s twelve months are told through rhymed scenes – a picture book first published in 1927.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow from Saga of the year in 1927 with the motif June.

Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: The scent of wild rose and night violet fills meadows and pastures. High on the mount stands the summer sun, shining nights and days. The bees, invited to a linden flower party, buzz giddy and happy. Grandma said that right then is the best time to start bathing. Let us row out to the islet, mother, the one with the finest sand! Mother can steer, and Olle rows to the shallow beach. The reeds rattle around the bow of the boat, hook legs and stop. At last we came outside the bowing tops of the reeds.

The lake is as still as mirror glass, reflecting the wings of the mergansers. Look, now we've rowed it to crass in many hundreds of rings! Brita lies so lazily in the front, stretching her legs leisurely. Wake up Brita, take care, take care, the boat is scraping against the rock! Oh, how lovely the water is, say, you can't think of anything better! Little one, hurry up and dip yourself, or we'll have to splash! No but look! A mast so big easily on the waves dance! It will be magnificent as a maypole, mother, dressed in flowers and wreaths!

Come and we'll tie up our rod, take it home to the paddock. Alas, if summer were twice as long! Now it's a party all day!

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
