From Garden Apprentice to the Royal Society
When Georg Dionysius Ehret painted this juniper illustration in 1745, he had already made an unusual journey: from garden apprentice to sought-after botanical illustrator. Twelve years later, he was elected to the Royal Society. In the eighteenth century, a plant image could thus be both a work of art and a route into the foremost circles of science.

The story behind the motif

Juniper is part of the monogenus, which is a plant genus of trees and shrubs within the cypress family. Here we see the plant beautifully illustrated with a vintage feel.
