One Motif, Several Editions
The earliest impressions of Hokusai’s Kajikazawa were printed using an indigo technique, while later editions added more colors. The image was therefore not entirely fixed: the same motif could change character from one printing to another.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Katsushika Hokusai’s color woodblock print Kajikazawa in Kai Province from circa 1830–1832.

A fisherman stands on a rocky ledge, holding his lines against the rushing river. His bent body, the shape of the cliff, and Mount Fuji in the background create a rhythmic composition in which the human figure becomes part of the landscape.

The motif is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The blue tones and the clear geometry demonstrate Hokusai’s ability to unite everyday life with monumental depictions of nature.

Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) | Created: c. 1830–1832.
