Not a Painting on Canvas
The model for this royal portrait was painted by the German court painter Friedrich Dürck, but the Nationalmuseum’s example is a much smaller porcelain image made by Gotthelf Rudolf Asel. With its gilt frame, it is only 18 centimetres high – a princely portrait in almost miniature format.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful portrait of Charles XV, created by the artist Friedrich Dürck. Karl XV was king of Sweden and Norway from 1859 until his death in 1872.

Charles XV was crowned in Sweden on May 3 and in Norway on August 5, 1860. During this time, there were bad relations between Sweden and Norway, which affected Charles' entire reign. Unfortunately, he did not succeed with Scandinavian politics as he had hoped.

Friedrich Dürck was a German portrait and genre painter. He was a student of V eit Hans Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Joseph Karl Stieler. After his education, Dürck spent several study breaks in Italy and he became a skilled portrait painter.
