The story behind the motif
Poster with a vintage illustration of a chestnut from the early 20th century. The chestnut is an impressive tree in the genus Castanea, belonging to the beech family (Fagaceae). These trees can grow very large, often over 20 meters tall, and are characterized by their elongated leaves with serrated edges.
In the spring, the chestnut trees bloom with small, discreet flowers that sit in long pendants, called catkins. Their fruit, the chestnuts, are enclosed in spiky green husks and ripen in autumn when the husks split open and the nuts fall to the ground.
