The Painting He Wanted Back
It was commissioned by the Manchester collector Henry McConnel as a pendant to Turner’s view of Venice. When McConnel ran into financial difficulties, he sold both works in 1849—but regretted it: in a letter from 1861, he unsuccessfully tried to buy back at least one of the paintings.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful painting painted by the British artist William Turner in 1835. In the picture we see a moonlit landscape that changes from a golden color to light blue along the horizon. We see several ships and a small, dark rowing boat with two passengers moving between them.

To the right of the painting we see three flames in the darkness. The shapes of men shoveling coal, boxes and barges are dark silhouettes against the firelight and smoke. More rowing boats float among the boats in the distance.

Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , the style of which can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. His art is among the world's most valued. In 2009, his painting was sold The Temple of Jupiter Panellenius for the equivalent of SEK 103 million, which is the second highest amount paid for a British work of art. In 2006, a Venetian landscape was sold by Turner for the equivalent of SEK 283 million.

Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner | Created: 1835.
