The story behind the motif
Poster with an old map of Norway published in Hamburg in 1761, incl Ove Andreas Wangensteen as cartographer and Thomas Albrecht Pingeling as an engraver. I
In the upper left corner of the map there is an inserted special map of Nordland and Finnmarken as well as the Diocese of Trondheim. The map also includes border areas in Sweden, including Dalsland, Värmland, Dalarna, Härjedalen and Jämtland. In the lower right corner, a sea creature can be seen holding a shield with Norway's coat of arms.
Ove Andreas Wangensteen was a Norwegian military and cartographer who is usually highlighted as the first Norwegian to publish a printed complete map of Norway. The engraver Thomas Albrecht Pingeling was active in Hamburg and was responsible for the copper engraving that made the map possible to print and distribute.
