Plate 99 Was a Team Effort
The hummingbird plate was number 99 in Ernst Haeckel’s landmark work Kunstformen der Natur, a series of one hundred natural-history plates. Haeckel drew on many years of research notes, but Adolf Giltsch transferred the sketches to colour lithography and redrew them on stone for printing – a meeting of zoology and precision craftsmanship.
