The story behind the motif
Poster with a front page from the French artistic and literary magazine La Plume from 1896. The illustration is drawn by none other than the famous Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939).
The motif is in the Art Nouveau style and depicts a woman with long golden hair wearing an elaborate headdress, with decorations of flowers and leaves along the edges. Around the woman's head we see the twelve astrological signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.), arranged in a circle.
Alfons Maria Mucha, also known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech graphic artist. Mucha lived in Paris during the Art Nouveau period and is best known for his theater posters, such as those for Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris at the time. He created paintings, book illustrations, and designs for carpets, jewelry, and theater sets in the style known as the Mucha style.
