Premiere on the Road to Sanremo
The Lambretta was named after Lambrate, Milan’s industrial district by the Lambro River, where Innocenti’s factory was located. When the model was launched in 1947, it was intended as inexpensive everyday transport in an Italy rebuilding after the war. Its first public long-distance run went from Milan to Sanremo: 290 kilometres on 12 October 1947.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph taken in Milan in 1950 by Sjöberg / KG Kristofferson. The picture shows two young people traveling through a busy Milanese street on a Lambretta, an iconic feature of post-war Italy.

The two young passengers sit close to each other on the pretty Lambretta, dressed in elegant 1950s clothing that reflects the style of the time. During this time, Milan was a center for both fashion, design and modernity, and the Lambretta quickly became the symbol of the new urban life. It was smooth, easy to drive and perfectly suited for the city's narrow streets. The photo captures precisely this feeling of forward thinking, a combination of Italian everyday life, technological development and the special atmosphere that characterized 1950s Milan.
