Stockholm’s park play had already begun in 1937 as a summer programme in nine inner-city parks. During the 1950s, it increasingly became part of the city’s idea of childhood: free play, but with trained staff, equipment and designated spaces in a rapidly growing Stockholm.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph taken in the 1950s by Sjöberg / KG Kristofferson. In the picture, two small children walk hand in hand along a sunny Stockholm street, barefoot and bare-backed in their summer clothes.

They walk with natural, light steps over the flagstones of the pavement, oblivious to the gaze of the outside world and completely absorbed in each other's company. Bicycles are parked along the adjacent facade, and the shadows on the ground gossip about a quiet summer day in the city.

The children's interaction, the small hand that securely holds the other, the posture, the soft steps capture a time when the freedom of childhood often took place on the street outside the home. It is a moment of simple presence, where friendship and fraternal care take center stage. The light, the structure of the street and the stripped-down environment create a timeless composition that carries both warmth and nostalgia.
