Before the Lettering
Chéret’s poster began as a proof without text—a so-called “épreuve avant la lettre”. The Bibliothèque nationale de France preserves both the early version and the finished, lettered poster, printed at Imprimerie Chaix in Paris around 1891–1893. Together, they preserve an unusually clear trace of how a Belle Époque poster was made.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration L'Arc en Ciel created in 1894 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

The poster depicts a woman in motion or dancing, a recurring theme in Chéret's work. In this case, she is surrounded by bright colors, the most prominent of which is a rainbow in strong and vibrant shades of yellow, red, blue and green. L'Arc en Ciel was not only an artistic achievement, but also an advertisement for a spectacular performance or event, a common purpose for Chéret's posters.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
