The story behind the motif
Poster with an illustration from Lasse-little in the garden, one of Elsa Beskow's many beloved children's books from 1923. The motif is called Song of the Apple Tree. Little Lasse and his friend September sit in the apple tree personified by a beautiful young woman who plays music for them.
Elsa Beskow was a well-known and much-loved Swedish author and illustrator who wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Lasse-little in the garden is part of a long series of stories in which Beskow depicts children's adventures in nature, with a mixture of realism and fantasy.
Similar to many of her other works, this work is filled with detailed and beautiful illustrations that complement the poetic text. The theme revolves around the joy of discovery and the child's relationship to nature, something that was consistent in Beskow's work. Through Lasse's adventure, the reader learns about the garden's various plants and animals, while the book conveys important values such as respect for nature and an understanding of its cycles.
