From a Medical Handbook
The source image comes from Medical Botany, a work that combined plants from the London, Edinburgh and Dublin pharmacopoeias with a guide to British poisonous plants. The new edition of 1834–36 contained 185 hand-coloured plates—the image was therefore part of a medical reference work, not made as decoration.

The story behind the motif

Lavender has traditionally been used for its medicinal properties, including its calming effect on the mind and body. It is also said to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
