Le Ballon did not end up in the Library of Congress as an isolated magazine illustration. It is part of the Tissandier Collection, around 975 aeronautical images assembled by the brothers Gaston and Albert Tissandier – pioneers of balloon flight themselves. This is a balloon image preserved through an archive created by people who actually flew.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustrated advertisement for the French aviation magazine " Le ballon " from 1883.

The text of the ad describes the contents as a "quarterly report of all ascents, 6th year, January, February, March, 1883".

The ad shows a beautifully illustrated balloon with two passengers flying through the clouds. The image is believed to be a clipping from a book or magazine.
