Where Monet Learned to Paint Outdoors
In Le Havre, Eugène Boudin persuaded the young Claude Monet in 1858 to leave the studio and paint directly from nature. Twenty-five years later, Boudin signed this painting with both the year and the place name – from the same coastal setting that became an important breeding ground for Impressionism.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Le havre created by the French artist Eugène Boudin in 1883. In the painting , Boudin has created a beautiful and pleasant color scheme with the boats, the sky and the sea.

The painting is named Le Havre, which is a large city and municipality in Normandy, France. Actually, the city is called Le Havre de Notre Dame de Grâce and was founded in 1517. The city's port is the largest in France, with around 100 million tons of cargo each year.

Boudin was a landscape painter and is considered a forerunner of Impressionism. In 1824 he was born in the Normandy region, which may be a reason why many of his paintings are inspired by and take place in different parts of Normandy.
