A Poster for a Literary Rebel
Berthon’s 1897 lithograph was made for the Parisian journal L’Ermitage. The year before, the journal had changed direction, from a monthly review to an artistic and literary publication, and in January 1896 it had prepublished an excerpt from André Gide’s Les nourritures terrestres.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration L'Ermitage , a masterpiece of Art Nouveau created by French artist Paul Berthon in 1897. The work was published as the cover image for the Parisian literary magazine L'Ermitage Revue Illustrée, which was published between 1890 and 1907.
The illustration shows a woman surrounded by lilies, with long reddish hair and she wears a gold brooch in her hair.
Berthon was particularly known for his portraits of women, often depicted as idealized figures inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite artists. In "L'Ermitage" he combines these influences with the decorative and stylized aesthetic characteristic of Art Nouveau.
Frame not included.
