The Admiral Behind the Pen
Jacob Hägg did not paint maritime history from a distance. He was a naval officer, took part in long voyages aboard the frigate Vanadis and later became a rear admiral. After retiring, he directed the naval-history collections from 1907 to 1927 – a double life that gave his studies of ships unusual expertise.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Line ship" by the Swedish artist Jacob Hägg (1839-1931) 

The painting was made around the 1880s and is an ink drawing depicting the 74-gun ship Göta Lejon. The ship was designed by Sheldon Gilbert and built in 1746, which places the motif in the great power period of the Swedish navy.

Jacob Hägg was educated at the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts in Stockholm and was later employed as a teacher there. He was a diligent artist and his work was characterized by a naturalistic style with a strong focus on light and atmosphere. Hägg's artistry spanned several decades and he was an important part of the Swedish 19th century's artistic development.
