The story behind the motif
Poster with illustration of a larch tree and its cones, in Latin Larch, from the 19th century. The larch tree is a genus of deciduous conifers within the family Pinaceae. These trees are unique among conifers in that they lose their needles every fall and get new ones in the spring.
Larch trees produce small, egg-shaped cones that ripen in the fall. They start as green and turn brown as they ripen. The cones consist of tightly fitting seed scales that protect the enclosed seeds. As the cones mature, the scales open to release the seeds.
