The Fjord Was the Road
When the photograph was taken around 1910, Lysebotn still depended on the boat as its regular link with the outside world. Lysevegen, built as a construction road for the Tjodan power station, did not open until 1984. The image therefore belongs to a time when the fjord was not merely a landscape, but the very road in and out.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful photograph of a rowing boat along the Lysefjord , taken in 1918 by Anders Beer Wilse.

The Lysefjord is a 35 kilometer long fjord, lined by steep mountain sides in southwestern Norway, east of Stavanger.

Anders Beer Wilse was a Norwegian photographer who documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century and also worked in the United States. After graduating from the technical school in Horten in 1882, he emigrated to the United States in 1884. Wilse traveled extensively in Norway, both on assignment and for his own interest. He took his 10 kg camera to inaccessible places through difficult terrain, as far north as Svalbard.
