Before the Match King
The Kalmar factory was built in 1906–07 under the direction of Torsten Kreuger, Ivar Kreuger’s younger brother. As early as 1913, it joined Förenade Svenska Tändsticksfabriker – an early step in the merger that soon made the family’s local factories the foundation of an international match empire.

The story behind the motif
Poster with antique match label from Kalmar tändsticksfabrik. On match boxes that were produced in Sweden in the past, labels were affixed that showed which match factory and brand made the matches.

The labels were adapted to the market the matches were intended for and as matches were a major Swedish export, matches were distributed all over the world and the motifs varied greatly to suit the clientele.
