The Frame That Caused Offence
One of the earliest painted versions had a wooden frame decorated with sperm and a foetus – so provocative at the time that Munch soon replaced it. In the graphic versions, however, the frame survived as part of the image, a reminder that Munch connected desire, birth and death.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch from 1894. 

The painting depicts a half-naked woman with a soft facial expression. Munch combines erotic and emotional elements in this work, where beauty and suffering are intertwined.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was a Norwegian artist and one of the most influential figures in modern art. He is best known for his dramatic paintings that reflect anxiety, death, loneliness and human existence. His work had a major impact on both Symbolism and Expressionism, and his work continues to be both loved and debated around the world.
