A Picture-Book Calendar
Beskow’s image of May was not intended as a standalone picture, but as part of a picture-book calendar. In Årets saga from 1927, each month was given its own image and rhymed verse; from the very beginning, May and June are named as the year’s most flourishing months. The seasons also became a lesson in the calendar.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow from Saga of the year in 1927 with the motif May.

Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: Dear Mrs. Björk, don't stand dark, let out your bright green curls! See hazel pendants and goldenrod; see the whole ground full of whites and the willow politely bowing! Put out your thousand bright green leaves, then first all the world can be sparklingly happy!” Praying stand small spring bulbs, violets with their hats on their necks. Now the birch laughs, when every bud is broken. Look, now she shines green in her top! Then it will be a joy on the slopes. Look, cuckoo with golden viva take a turn, soon the lily of the valley will ring with bells on a string.

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is probably one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
