A Verse with Beethoven Behind It
When Årets saga appeared in 1927, the words were already a well-known mnemonic song. The text “Januari börjar året” was written by Betty Ehrenborg-Posse as an educational song about the seasons, and is traditionally sung to a melody from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Beskow thus gave an older schoolroom verse a new life in pictures.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful illustration "The months" from Elsa Beskow's children's book Saga of the year which was first published in 1927. The book describes the seasons and months depicted with a wreath and a verse.

The illustration shows a decorative wreath symbolizing the turn of the year, with flowers, berries, fruits and winter greens representing the different seasons. In the middle is a verse that lists the months of the year from January to December and describes how nature changes during the year.

Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator (1874–1953), known for his beloved children's books and richly detailed illustrations. She created fairy tales where nature and everyday life are mixed with fantasy, such as The Adventures of Sessalätt. Beskow is considered one of the Nordic countries' most significant children's book illustrators. Explore more classics Elsa Beskow here.
