The story behind the motif
Poster with a black and white photograph of two beautiful women in white dresses on their way to Midsummer celebrations in 1940. In the photo we see two more women sitting in the overgrown grass.
Midsummer is a holiday celebrated near the summer solstice, mainly in northern Europe. It is unknown whether Midsummer celebrations existed in pre-Christian times, so any pre-Christian connections are speculative.
From an astronomical point of view, the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere falls only three days before the original Christian midsummer date, June 24 (with the opening feast day on June 23). North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not even set below the horizon at the summer solstice (midnight sun) and even near the Arctic Circle it is bright 24/7.
