Seventeen Years on Loan
Morning Ride along the Beach entered the Rijksmuseum as part of an unusually large bequest. Jean and Maria Drucker-Fraser had lent the painting to the museum since 1927 and bequeathed it in 1944 together with 71 other paintings. The bright beach scene therefore became part of the museum’s permanent collection only after seventeen years on loan.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting Morning Ride along the Beach created by Anton Mauve, 1876.

Mauve was part of the Hague School, which is a collective term for a group of painters active in The Hague between about 1860 and 1890. They reacted against the established painters of the Art Academy who idealized reality. In contrast, the Hague School painters, including Jozef Israels, the Maris brothers and Anton Mauve, strove to render what they saw realistically. They admired the French Barbizon School artists, who, like them, worked as much as possible outdoors (out in nature). They were focused on capturing the light and atmosphere of a landscape.

The painters of the Hague School were drawn to the harsh existence of poor fishermen, such as those living in nearby Scheveningen. Here, however, Mauve depicted the other side of that fishing village: the sunny world of the wealthy bourgeoisie. Three riders go down to the beach, where the bathing huts are ready for swimmers. The blonde and blue color scheme effectively conveys the brown atmosphere of a summer day by the sea.
