The Poster That Opened the Door
Jules Chéret was commissioned to make the poster when the Moulin Rouge opened in 1889. It became part of Paris’s new poster culture, in which colour lithographs not only covered the city’s streets but also began to be collected by enthusiasts—long before advertising posters were considered art worth preserving.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the Moulin Rouge illustration created in 1889 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

This poster promoted the opening of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris, located on Place Blanche in Montmartre. The poster shows a woman riding a donkey, surrounded by a swirl of dancing women in the background.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
