An Archive in the Mountain
Behind the mountain is a room most people will never see. In 1938–39, sculptor Gutzon Borglum had a 21-metre tunnel blasted for a Hall of Records, intended to explain the monument to future generations. Congress halted the project in 1939; instead, a small archive was placed there in a titanium vault in 1998.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a unique image of Mount Rushmore In the state of South Dakota. The site is famous for the eighteen meter tall granite sculptures depicting US presidents Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt.

They were created by the Danish-American sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son together with 400 workers. The artwork was begun in 1927 and completed in 1941.

In the picture, President Abraham Lincoln is being cleaned and polished, and Mika O'Mera is hanging from the ropes on his nose, repairing cracks in the granite. 6 Sept 1962
