Morse code’s dots and dashes were created for the telegraph, but soon became crucial at sea as well. When wireless telegraphy took hold around the turn of the twentieth century, ships could send messages and distress signals beyond the horizon – using the same short and long signals as on land.

The story behind the motif

Semaphores are used to regulate maritime traffic and monitor coastal fires while Morse code or "Morse code" is a method of communication that uses sequences of dots and dashes to represent letters and numbers. Developed in the 1830s, it became essential in telegraphy and radio communication.
The illustration was published with the book "Maritime Telegraph Systems, Buoys, Beacons, Tidal Signals ptr." created by Victor Carlsson, captain in the Swedish merchant navy. The book aimed to document maritime signaling systems and included 44 prints of maritime signaling systems from the time that existed around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
