Flying Aircraft Carriers
In the 1930s, the navy’s airships were more than flying billboards. In 1930, USS Los Angeles tested a trapeze beneath its hull that made it possible both to release and retrieve a Vought UO-1 aircraft in flight – an early attempt to turn an airship into a flying aircraft carrier.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an aerial view of Manhattan, New York in the 1930s. In the upper part of the picture we see a type of airship called a zeppelin.

A zeppelin is a rigid airship whose engine runs on gas. It has a metal skeleton covered with canvas. During the First World War, nearly a hundred German zeppelins were built, which were used, among other things, for the bombing of London.
